Can AI Really Model a Building? A BIM Skeptic Spends a Weekend Finding Out
A few days ago a post went viral claiming that a 31 million dollar hotel project had its entire MEP model built by artificial intelligence. The comments were the usual split you see whenever AI collides with a specialised field: half the room was amazed, and the other half, mostly the people who actually do this work, were quietly rolling their eyes. Having spent years around BIM, I will admit my first reaction sat firmly in the second camp. It sounded too good to be true, and things that sound too good to be true usually are.
But eye-rolling in the comments has never taught me anything, so I decided to stop reacting and start testing. I gave up an hour over the weekend, opened up a tool called Blender MCP, and set out to see for myself exactly where the hype ends and the reality begins. What follows is the honest account of that, the good and the awkward, and what I think it means for how we will create 3D models from here on.

What Blender MCP actually is
Before the experiment makes sense, it helps to know what the tool does. Blender is the well-known free 3D software, and Blender MCP is simply a bridge that connects Claude, the AI assistant, directly to it. The interesting bit is what that connection changes about the workflow. Once the two are talking, you never touch the modelling tools yourself. You describe what you want in ordinary language, and the AI builds it inside Blender while you watch. To keep the test grounded in something real, I did not invent a fantasy brief. I handed it the two documents every builder in this country already works from: a standard 2D floor plan and a front elevation.

What actually happened
From nothing more than those two drawings, the AI worked through the building the way one step at a time, while I mostly watched. It:
- read the plan and worked out the dimensions
- put up the walls, floor slabs, staircase and roof
- cut the window and door openings
- applied realistic materials to plaster, glass, railings, timber and stone
- set up sunlight, a sky and a camera, then rendered the result
Then came the part that still feels slightly surreal to describe. I refined the entire building by talking to it. I asked it to:
- Add windows on the other sides
- Put a water tank and solar panels on the roof
- Fix the empty-looking pool
- Move pool away from the path
- Add a swing and a poolside lounger
Each request took a sentence, and each time it edited the model and rendered again within minutes. There were no menus to go through, no commands to remember, and no hunting for the right family.

The reality check that mattered
A good-looking render proves almost nothing, and this is exactly where most viral AI demos quietly stop. I wanted to review the model the way I would review any coordination model in practice, so I exported it to FBX and opened it in Navisworks. As I suspected, the flaws surfaced quickly. There was geometry that needed cleaning, elements that were not quite right, and the kind of small problems a trained eye catches in seconds.
Here is the part I did not expect to feel positive about, though. That is genuinely the good news. The issues were visible rather than hidden, and in most cases I could fix them by simply prompting again. The tool does not behave like a finished, buildable deliverable. It behaves like a fast, tireless junior who produces a great deal very quickly but still needs someone experienced to point and correct. Framed that way, it stops being a threat and starts being useful.

Two things it can already do well
Once I stepped back, two distinct capabilities stood out. The first is the obvious one, turning a plan and elevation into a navigable 3D model in an afternoon rather than over several days. The second surprised me more. You do not actually need drawings at all. Give it nothing but a description, something as loose as “a modern two-storey villa with a balcony and a flat roof,” and it will build a model from scratch for you to react to. One path digitises what you already have; the other conjures something from a single sentence.
What is real today, and what is coming
I want to be precise here, because precision is what was missing from the viral post.
What it is genuinely strong at today:
- massing, concept models and client visuals
- turning a sketch or plan into something you can walk a client through in hours, not days
- taking feedback in plain language and iterating on the spot
What it still cannot do on its own:
- hit construction-grade dimensions (it gets close, not exact)
- run without someone who understands buildings steering it and catching mistakes
- produce a coordinated model you would hand straight to site; this is visualisation, not documentation
That leaves the rest of the post as flowing prose, with bullets only in the three spots where readers are really scanning.
The direction of travel, however, is hard to ignore. Picture this same conversational loop tied into BIM and IFC, checked against building codes, coordinating structure and services, and pricing the model live as it changes. Sketch to a coordinated, costed model in a single day is not science fiction, it is a short road from where we already are. The 31 million dollar headline may well be early, but the capability sitting behind it is not fantasy.

You do not need to be a coder to do any of this. If you can install an app and copy and paste a few lines, you can have this running in about twenty minutes and be building your first model the same afternoon. Your 20-minute setup guide
Here is the whole thing start to finish. You will install three things: Blender (the 3D software), Claude Desktop (the app that talks to Blender), and the Blender MCP add-on that bridges the two.
Step 1 — Install Blender. Download it free from blender.org and install it like any normal app. Version 4.x or newer is best.

Step 2 — Install Claude Desktop. Get it from here and sign in. One thing to watch: this only works on the desktop app, not the browser or the phone.

Step 3 — Install the Blender MCP add-on. Follow instructions here: https://www.blender.org/lab/mcp-server/

NOTE: Step 2 in the instructions has to be done 2-3 times until you see that the extension has been added. First it will ask you to enable web access, then repeat step 2 and this time it should install extension. You should see this, as below, if your setup was successful.

Step 4 — Introduce Claude to Blender. In Claude Desktop, go to Customize -> Extensions -> Browse Extensions -> Search Blender -> Click Add Blender. Done!

Step 5 — Start the connection. Leave Blender open. Add your prompt to Claude in a new chat and ensure Blender is turned on in the Connectors.

That is it. Now start a chat, attach your floor plan and elevation, and ask it to model the building. From there you just talk to it, exactly like I did above.

A couple of things that trip people up: if nothing connects, make sure Blender is open and the add-on is enabled, then restart Claude.
My honest take
We are not on the edge of replacing designers or BIM professionals, and I say that as someone who went in expecting to debunk the whole thing. What is genuinely changing is the wait between thinking and seeing. That gap used to be measured in days of modelling. This weekend, for me, it was measured in minutes (25 minutes to be precise).

If you work in construction, real estate or design, this is worth an afternoon of your attention, because the teams that learn to steer these tools well are going to move a great deal faster than the ones still arguing about whether they are real.
